Former Secretary of the Navy John F. Lehman Will discuss an sign copies of his new book Oceans Ventured: Winning the Cold War at Sea on October 26 at Spring Mill Country Club

John Lehman is a former U.S. Navy aviator and served as United States Secretary of the Navy from 1981 to 1987. From 2003 to 2004, he was a member of the 9/11 Commission. As one of the chief architects and leaders of the Navy’s Cold War resurgence, Lehman had unprecedented access and in his new book provides unparalleled insight into the personalities, theories, and command decisions that helped America win the Cold War. In OCEANS VENTURED, he describes the intricate high-stake chess game played across the seas, including then-revolutionary moves such as sub missions under the polar ice caps. Lehman also discusses political battles in Washington and the bid for public support at home—from critics of Reagan’s openly antagonistic posture to the Navy’s participation in the creation of the iconic 1980s blockbuster movie Top Gun.

Ultimately, the Navy’s contribution to the end of the Cold War was as much a matter of economic power as it was firepower. Lehman shows how the Soviets simply did not have the resources to match the vision of Reagan and his staff. Lehman not only provides new insight into the strategies and warriors who defeated the Soviets, but provides readers with important lessons about the restrained use of power and the costs of protecting freedom and democracy.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Johnsville Centrifuge and Science Museum’s Capital Campaign to construct a museum and STEAM learning center in Northampton Township. Click here to download you ticket order form now.
